Chris Russell, VP engineering at Swivel Secure, outlines how tokenless authentication solutions can be integrated as part of a BYOD strategy.

The rising trend of employees using their own personal devices in the workplace to access the corporate network continues to disrupt IT departments and has left businesses wondering how they can come to terms with this cultural shift. Allowing the use of personal devices, whether they be smart phones, laptops or tablets, obviously brings with it major security concerns for businesses and is currently one of the biggest challenges being faced by IT directors. What many resellers are yet to realise is that today’s bring your own device (BYOD) culture provides a unique opportunity, as the heightened risk to network security drives greater demand for stronger authentication.

Any employee using a personal wireless device to access business critical applications is essentially a security risk predominantly because, like remote workers, they are operating outside the control and protection of the fixed network perimeter. BYOD enables resellers to save their customers money as the employee’s personal device can also be used as a virtual authentication token, via a dedicated and secure mobile app. This enables them to meet the security requirements of their corporate network without incurring the costs associated with traditional token-based solutions.

The partnership enables the ForeScout’s automated security control platform (CounterACT) to leverage Gigamon’s Traffic Visibility Fabric to have broader visibility of all devices communicating on the network and dynamically apply security policy to reduce a range of security risks. At the heart of the combined solution is the Gigamon Visibility Fabric that provides intelligent traffic mirroring to enable CounterACT to ensure that:

Tokenless authentication vendor admits its preoccupation with its patented technology had held it back.

Swivel Secure is repositioning itself as a jack of all trades in the tokenless authentication market after admitting its preoccupation with its unique PINsafe technology had cost it sales.

Swivel, which offers a raft of mobile phone-based authentication solutions, has traditionally led every pitch with PINsafe, its patented one-time code extraction protocol. It also offers a browser-based solution similar to that of GrIDsure, which went under last year before its intellectual property was acquired by CryptoCard – which has itself since been gobbled up by SafeNet.

According to Gartner, the authentication market was worth $2bn (£1.3bn) in 2011 and is growing at 30 per cent annually. The market watcher said Swivel offers the broadest range of delivery options in the space.

Despite this, Chris Russell, vice president of technology at the UK-based firm, admitted that Swivel’s 20 to 30 resellers had been held back by its overemphasis on PINsafe.

“[PINsafe] is a big part of our business but we felt we were losing business in the me-too space as people associated us with just that solution,” he said.

“We had all these solutions but were not talking about it in a clear enough way for our channel partners to go out and sell them.”

NComputing, the world leader in end-to-end desktop virtualization solutions, today announced immediate availability of vSpace Client for Windows. This innovative software client transforms PCs, laptops, netbooks and tablets into high performance NComputing virtual clients, delivering secure anytime anywhere access to corporate desktops or selected applications running on a central host. vSpace Client for Windows leverages the powerful vSpace Server software to scale to 100 users sessions on a single host PC or server. IT departments can now support key initiatives – mobility, BYOD, remote access and Windows 7 migration – with far fewer resources and leveraging existing and legacy computing equipment. vSpace Client ensures a rich and powerful user experience while providing IT with all the capabilities, flexibility, and cost advantages of centralized desktop management.

“The virtual client computing market has come of age in the past couple of years and is expected to approach $2.7 billion by 2015,” said Al Gillen, Program VP, System Software at IDC. “NComputing’s vSpace Client software fills in an important functional role and broadens the ability of NComputing to serve its existing customer base as well as stimulate new market opportunities. Empowering NComputing users to easily deploy both hard and soft virtual desktop environments, at a compelling price/performance ratio, fits well into NComputing’s solution set.”

With 50,000 customers and more than 3 million virtual desktops deployed globally, NComputing leads the industry in delivering simple, powerful and affordable virtual desktop solutions. Already beta tested at more than 1,000 customer sites, vSpace Client is so simple to download and install that customers are usually up-and-running in 15 minutes. Customers can either extend existing NComputing vSpace deployments using a combination of thin clients and software clients, or deploy a software-only solution that leverages their existing Windows-based equipment. Future plans for vSpace Client software include versions for iOS and Android devices. Importantly, vSpace Client gives NComputing channel partners more extensive set of solutions to help their customers leverage mobility and BYOD for their business advantage.

Professor John Walker London Chapter ISACA Security Advisory Group and CTO of Secure-Bastion believes the days of external simplex threats have now given way to multi-faceted attack vectors.

And this is before we get into the realm of rogue employees and privileged identity management. And it’s against this backdrop that the fundamental principles of governance, risk and compliance (GRC – the bedrock of ISACA) have returned to the fore.

But what are today’s cyberthreats? From detailed analysis of the current threat landscape, it can be seen that the hybridised nature of today’s security threats centres on hacking, serious and organised crime and the recently-arrived issue of hacktivists.

And let’s not overlook the problem of misplaced data. Add to this the dangers hosted by smart malware code such as Stuxnet and Duqu – and the possibility of a cyberwar as outlined by Foreign Secretary William Hague this year – and you have an idea of the challenges facing government.

Overactive Imagination?
For many years there has also been some debate as to the reality of any form of cyberwar or cyberconflict – which many observers ascribe to an overactive imagination on the part of the industry’s thought leaders and analysts.

Even taking into account recent high-profile system hacks – there have been no examples of a pure cyberwar casualty. While there has never been a cyberwar, let us not forget, neither has there been a nuclear war, but such weapons of mass destruction have nevertheless been used.

During 2010/2011 the US and UK governments announced they were focusing more on cyber defences. In doing so, they indicated that this low-cost method of delivering a potentially devastating payload to the heart of the enemy’s systems was now considered a serious threat.

In addition, the UK government also revealed that, at the end of 2010, various servers has been attacked using the notorious Zeus malware. On this same topic Foreign Secretary Hague informed a Munich security conference that the attack was considered to be part of an international effort to infect systems.

Though malware is still on the rise – the concept that today’s malware is ever more imaginative is weakening and, as a result, the anti-malware developers may be a little closer to developing ahead-of-the-game compliance technologies. This should not allow complacency. The Infosecurity Europe show in the spring of 2011 saw the threat of AETs – advanced evasion threats – becoming reality, but very little media attention was given to the development of more advanced AET threats that the malware bandwagon inevitably evolved.

The risk landscape changed last year largely as a result of hacktivist groups such as Anonymous and its forebears. This is no idle threat – attacks targetted the Royal Navy, the UK government, the NHS and commercial sector organisations and newspapers.
